What is Neurofibromatosis?
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to develop on nerve tissues.
Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) affects approximately 1 in 3,000 people. It is caused by a genetic mutation that disrupts the production of the protein neurofibromin, which is essential for regulating cell growth.
NF1 causes changes in skin pigmentation, the appearance of café-au-lait spots (light brown patches on the skin), and the growth of benign tumors known as neurofibromas. Though typically found on the face and neck, these tumors can appear on other parts of the body. These tumors are typically non-cancerous, but there is a possibility they may become malignant over time.
